7. Retrieving Articles Using Citations

Didn't find the full text of your article in UC-eLinks either? Click on the UC-eLinks link to the Melvyl Catalog. As you saw in the movie, Melvyl will tell you whether UCSC owns a print copy of the journal containing your article. If so, write down the journal's call number.

You'll find every volume and issue of the journal with this call number, so you'll need just a bit more information to get your article.
Look at the article record in Infotrac and take down the citation: title, author, journal name, volume and issue numbers, page numbers, and date of publication.

These will not only help you find the print version of the article, but you'll also have everything you need when it comes time to list the references for your paper.

Now with the journal's call number and the article's citation in hand, go to the section of the library for that call number and, based on your citation information, pull the appropriate volume and issue number from the shelf. Go to the page numbers you've noted and voilá! — you have your article!
